Summary Business
Optimization
Aviation operations, second year, fourth semester.

,Introduction:
This summary is meant for second year student attempting to finish the course Business Optimization
from the Aviation studies at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam. The summary will give you all you need
to know from the lectures in a clear and thorough manner. Because of the rather extensive nature of
each of the presentations (they’re rather long and somewhat complicated to summarize), the
financial part has been separated from the total summary. This summary focusses on the theoretical
course material offered throughout the fourth semester. Slides from the Business Optimization
lectures will be explained so that you truly understand what questions can be expected on the exam.

The lectures’ material is heavy on lean methodology and its application. To fully understand these
methods it’s important to be able to visualize what its role is in regards to Lean. That’s why I’ve
included a lot of images from the presentation material. Some slides of the presentations have not
been included because they would only serve to reiterate what has been said in another
presentation from a different week, which would undermine the point of a summary.

Please note that this summary does not include finance, since it totaled 30+ pages already by just
including the theory parts of the presentations. Also, finance theory should be put into practice, i.e.
by making the assignments provided in the workshops on DLWO, and is difficult to learn from a
summary alone.

Learning goals:
1) Analyze a current state situation and determine which future state with optimization
methodology is required to improve specific processes
2) Create value stream/process mapping for a specific operational process and determine
action for implementation
3) Create change proposals from the tactical business plan and search for the most optimum
solutions to achieve overall goals
4) Analyze hazards and assess risks in daily operations at an airport
5) Evaluate the business optimization cycle and how that influences daily operations
6) Evaluate ‘Control-Aspect’ in an organization with the ‘balanced score card’ and ‘value tree’
7) Create a cash flow statement
