assisted living facility (ALF) -ANSW- For people needing assistance with ADLs but
wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Exists to bridge the
gap between independent living and nursing homes.
advocate -ANSW- A person who defends another person.
Ambulation -ANSW- To walk in an upright position, or assist someone to walk.
Assault -ANSW- An attempt or threat to cause physical harm to a resident.
Confidentiality -ANSW- Keeping information about another person to oneself and
sharing it only under appropriate circumstances.
DNR & DNAR -ANSW- Do Not (Attempt) to Resuscitate. An order stating a resident
should not be revived.
empathy -ANSW- Ability to experience the feelings and thoughts of another person.
geriatrics -ANSW- Related to the elderly
Gerontology -ANSW- The study of the elderly
health team -ANSW- All health care personnel, plus the resident and the resident's
family; all are involved in returning the resident to the highest possible level of health
and well-being
invasion of privacy -ANSW- Exposing a person's private affairs, or using a person's
name or photograph without their permission
living will -ANSW- Legal document that outlines how much medical care a person
wants to receive and whether the person wants to be resuscitated if in a near-death or
vegetative state
Long term care (LTC) -ANSW- Medical and personal care that is divided to Long-term
residents of nursing homes or rehabilitation centers
, Negligence -ANSW- Failure to act in a reasonable, caring manner toward a resident
Ombudsman -ANSW- A public official designated to investigate resident complaints
physical abuse -ANSW- Physical violence or pain inflicted on a resident
policy -ANSW- An official statement of what will and will not be done at a facility
procedure -ANSW- An official statement of the steps to take to do something at a
facility
psychological abuse -ANSW- Emotional or psychological manipulation used to compel
a resident to do something they do not want or that is not in their best interests
Sexual Battery -ANSW- Any non-consensual touching of the intimate parts of a
resident
Simple Battery -ANSW- Any form of non-consensual, harmful or insulting contact on
the resident, even if no injury occurs
Tasks of a CNA -ANSW- • Helping with residents' admissions and discharges
• Helping meet residents' needs for personal hygiene, nutrition, elimination, oxygen,
safety, physical comfort and exercise
•Measuring and recording residents' vital signs
•Moving and lifting residents'
•Observing residents' during any of the above tasks and reporting anything remarkable
to the RNs
AWIPE -ANSW- Announce yourself; Wash your hands; Introduce yourself; Pull the
curtain to provide privacy; Explain the procedure
trustworthy -ANSW- Being trusted with confidential information *HIPPA*
well-mannered -ANSW- Courteous and polite to co-workers and residents, their
families and their visitors. Address people by their preferred title and name. NO
NICKNAMES!
What a CNA can not do -ANSW- • cannot give medications
• cannot insert tubes or other medical devices
• cannot take verbal or phone orders from doctors
• cannot perform sterile technique procedures
• cannot discuss info about planned treatments with resident or their family
• cannot discuss info concerning resident with members outside of health care team
• cannot make diagnoses or prescribe treatments or medications
• cannot ignore an order or request if you are not trained or legally authorized (explain to
supervising nurse why)
