(Overview)

- not normal behavior is not a disorder already but the sign/symptoms.

PSYCHOLOGY - SCIENTIFIC study of human behavior and mental processes.

ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY

- branch of psychology that studies unusual patterns of behavior, emotion

and thought, which may or may not be understood as precipitating a

mental disorder. (dictionary of psychology)

HOW DO INVESTIGATORS INVESTIGATE?

- observation

- systematic

- gathering info and evidence

- link the scenes

- assessment

- interview the client (parallel interview - The panel type of interview is sometimes

referenced as parallel interviewing. In this format, the candidate meets with a group or panel of

interviewers from the company.)

- used a. k.a in names for confidentiality of patients in psychological reports.




UNDERSTANDING PSYCHOPATHOLOGY

- It is the scientific study of psychological disorders.

, PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDER

- The most widely accepted definition used in DSM-5 describes

“abnormal” as behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunctions that

are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with present

distress and impairment in functioning, or increased risk of suffering,

death, pain, or impairment.

- only used the abnormal word in DSM-5.

- 4D's + D(duration) more than 2 yrs. change to what type of disorder.



CRITERIA DEFINING PSYCHOLOGICAL A DISORDER (4D’s)

1. Dysfunction

- refers to a breakdown or deficit in one or more aspects of life cognitive,

emotional or behavior.

- paano nagkaroon ng dysfunctionality

2. Deviance

- different from the societal norms/culture/situation ex eating one’s own

hair, hearing voices, speaking strange words.

- out of norm action within the community.

EX: excoriation- repeated picking at one's own skin which results in areas of

swollen or broken skin and causes significant disruption in one's life.

EX: Trichotillomania - pulling disorder
