INTRODUCTION TO NURSING INFORMATICS NOTES
General Concepts
Informatics refers to the science of computer information systems.
It is a Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) competency defined as “Use
information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and
support decision-making” (Cronenwett et al., 2007, p. 129).
Health informatics, or health information technology, then, is the management of
health care information, using computers.
Nursing informatics is the science of using computer information systems in the
practiceof nursing.
It is defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) (2008) as “A specialty that
integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and
communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice to support patients,
nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings” (p. 1).
Nursing Informatics (NI) is a title that evolved from the French word “informatics”,
which referred to the field of applied computer sciencein nursing information.
- Example, if the patient can drink this medicine because he has allergy or not. The
technology can detect the allergies. Can retrieve the data’s from the other
department by using technology.
Since then, NI is moving to the forefront of the nursing information technology system.
Nursing informatics is “A specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science,
and information science in nursing practice” (American Nurses Association, 2001)
In 2010, every US healthcare setting employed at least one NI specialist in a Clinical
