~ 5.1 - chem ~
~ Atoms ~
All substances are made of particles
The three types of subatomic particles are:
Protons (positive charge)
Neutrons (no/neutral charge)
Electrons (negative charge)
~ The Nucleus ~
Centre of an atom
Contains protons + neutrons
The nucleus makes most of the mass (heavy) since protons and neutrons are both about
1800x larger than electrons
Positive charge from protons → nucleus is positive
~ 5.1 - chem ~ 1
, ~ Electrons ~
Found spinning (orbiting) around the nucleus
Negative charge from electrons is attracted by the positive nucleus
Known as electrostatic attraction (holds atom together; keeps electrons orbiting)
~ Atom Diagrams ~
Beryllium Carbon Magnesium
~ Elements~
Smallest unit of an element = atom
Within an element all atoms are identical and contain the same number of protons and in
the their nuclei.
