PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF INFANTS AND CHILDREN
Physical Examination in Neonates:
- divided by 2 :
Examination immediately after birth
Follow-up examination (focusing more on assessing each organ)
- Anamnesis :
History of hereditary diseases, history of previous pregnancy, history of present
pregnancy, history of current delivery
Examination Immediately After Birth
Purpose: assess neonatal adaptation, presence of congenital abnormalities, prognosis, follow-
up care
Look for depression of the respiratory and circulatory systems > APGAR values at 1 and 5
minutes
Physical Assessment Guidelines
A full physical assessment should be performed the first time the infant is admitted. Make
sure you record the results of the assessment accurately. Assessment includes:
- Vital sign
- Growth measurement
- System assessment
APGAR Value :
7-10 : no asphyxia
4-6: moderate asphyxia
0-3: severe asphyxia
Check :
- Patency of both nostrils
- Skin color
- Umbilical cord (infected or not, what color)
- Anus (insert thermometer into anus to check anal patency)
- Gender
- Is there a congenital abnormality
Advanced Examination
Consists of: general examination and systemic organs
