MANAGEMENT OF EMERGENCY PATIENTS WITH AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION
Definition of Airway Obstruction
Namely the disruption of breathing due to an obstruction in the airway by a foreign
object resulting in failure to supply oxygenation adequately.
Indications for airway clearance
- Additional breath sounds (stridor or wheezing)
- The patient seems to hold the neck and shows difficulty in breathing
Action Procedure
a. Mature
Abdominal Thrust (Abdominal Thrust) on conscious victim in a standing or sitting
position
1) Ask if the client is choking, can he talk or cough, observe difficulty in breathing
2) Instruct the patient to sit down to provide a sense of comfort and calm
3) Explain to the client that you have been trained to help in this situation, introduce
yourself, explain the procedure
4) Give client privacy
5) Open the airway
6) Do abdominal thrusts
- Stand behind the patient and wrap your arms around the client's waist
- Make a fist with one hand, insert the thumb into the fist and place the bent thumb
directly above the client's navel
- Using the other hand, grip the fist and press it against the client's abdomen with a
strong and fast upward thrust
- Perform successive thrusts as separate and complete movements until the airway
is clear
- Assess the patient's comfort level
- Say hamdallah
- Say goodbye and say hello

1) If the client does not respond, immediately call for help. If someone else is around,
ask him to call for help.
- Open the airway, do the head tilt chin lift
- Assess for respiratory obstruction, if any and visible remove it by means of a
