AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
Understanding
Management of airway & breathing to maintain oxygenation of the brain and other body
parts.
Objective
To keep the airway open so that oxygen can reach the lungs.
Airway Management Techniques
non-invasive or invasive procedures depending on the blockage above or below the glottis
and whether it is surgical or non-surgical .
1. Non Invasive Techniques
a. No tools
Clearing the airway manually by means of a triple airway maneuver: head extension,
lifting the chin and pushing the lower mandible (to lift the tongue that falls over the
airway)
b. Bag Mask Ventilation
c. Ooropharyngeal Airway (OPA)
d. Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA)
e. Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)
f. Kombituube (Oesophageal-Tracheal Double Lumen Airway)
2. Invasive Techniques
Tracheal Intubation
OROPHARINGEAL INSTALLATION (OPA)
Definition
Disruption of breathing due to an obstruction in the airway (risk of reversed tongue) by a
foreign object resulting in an emergency condition, namely failure to provide adequate
oxygen supply. So that a tool is needed to provide airway patency, one of which is OPA.
Procedure
1. Identification of indications
2. Use handscoon
3. Measure the OPA tube ) extend the tube from the corner of the patient's mouth to the tip
of the earlobe )
4. Place the patient in a supine position and use the head tilt chin lift or jaw thrust method
