, Road Safety Act 1967
• What is it?
The 1967 Act made a fundamental change in the law by
introducing for the first time a maximum prescribed level of
blood alcohol. The level chosen was 80 mg per 100 ml. The
Act also contains provisions about the circumstances in
which a driver can be required to provide a specimen of
blood or urine to determine their blood alcohol level.
• How does it apply to RTC’s?
It limits drivers to a blood alcohol level that is low enough
for them to be coherent whilst driving and therefore not be
in an accident. It also acts as a deterrent for drink drivers
that used to get away with it.
, Criminal Law
• What is it?
It is a system of law concerned with the
punishment of those who commit crimes.
• How does it apply to RTC’s?
If a driver breaks the law such as speeding, over
the blood alcohol limit or texting and driving,
their acts will be punishable by criminal law by
way of fines, community service, disqualified
driving license or even prison sentences.
