Week 3 Discussion-Option #2 Police-Citizen Encounter

Find a recent case where a police-citizen encounter went wrong. Compare and contrast

your case to Bryan Stevenson's encounter with the police. How did going through BOTH

of these cases help you understand the complexities surrounding these types of encounters.

A case that has recently come to light involves Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old African

American male who was subjected to physical assault by Memphis police officers for an

approximate period of three minutes on the evening of January 7. The encounter occurred

subsequent to his being flagged down for reckless driving, as per police reports (Rojas, 2023).

Drawing parallels between this instance and Bryan Stevenson's brush with the law enforcement

agencies underscores the systemic problems surrounding interactions between citizens and the

police. Of particular concern are issues such as racial prejudice and unwarranted use of force.

Both of the incidents mentioned above quickly turned violent, inflicting serious harm on

those affected. Nichols was subjected to a brutal beating at the hands of Memphis police officers,

resulting in his hospitalization and eventual demise. This reflects the experiences recounted in

"Just Mercy" by Stevenson, where he details cases of excessive force and maltreatment suffered

by his clients. One example is Mr. Ruffin, who was stopped by Gadsden police one night as they

suspected his car was swerving. Additionally, there was a black teenager who lost his life after

being shot by police for a minor traffic offense (Stevenson p.26).
