In this case, I would notify the police about the issue. My decision will be influenced by two
major factors: the CMA code of ethics and the nursing ethics. The CMA code of ethics states that
information about a patient should only be shared when maintaining confidentiality would result
in a significant risk of substantial harm to others or, in the case of incompetent patients, to the
patients themselves (CMA CODE OF ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM, 2023). The patient stole the
medicine not prescribed to him by any medical personnel; the also sought a refill, indicating that
he might be taking medicine or selling it to people. Given his substance abuse medical history, it
would be convenient to report him as an act of beneficence to protect him from further harm.
Additionally, Lorazepam and acetaminophen are very addictive, and for someone to finish 300
tablets after a few weeks is a cause for action. Therefore, as a medical professional guided by the
need to protect the patient from further damage and harm, I would report him to the police. My
