Project Title: A better plan for Dementia patient with Non-pharmaceutical treatment
Dementia is one of the most prevalent conditions that relate to older people. The
condition is progressive in nature and incurable. The patients decline in their cognitive abilities
and do not have a better memory, have speech difficulties, and have impaired reasoning and
judgment (Wang et al., 2020). The prevalence of this condition has triggered the health sector to
seek better medical options to help patients. The options present are pharmaceutical, which
involves medication, and non-pharmaceutical, which involves certain lifestyle modifications by
the patient. However, each treatment has its side effects, and there has not been established
which treatment can reduce the agitation by the patient and increase their awareness and lessen
side effects. Identifying which treatment is better than the other would help nursing homes invest
more in such treatment in order to achieve better outcomes. Therefore this business plan outlines
how a better treatment would be implemented and the financial cost after identifying which
treatment is better through the PICOT approach.
PICOT
In order to establish which method is better for the management of Dementia with fewer
side effects, a PICOT question is used. The PICOT question states, “Among geriatric residents
with Dementia, does reducing psychotropic medications, as opposed to not reducing the
psychotropic medications, manage their agitation better while increasing their awareness and
decreasing the side effects over 6 months?
