Considering introducing a pet in your life? This is an exciting and life-changing
decision and has to be made with a lot of previous thought (Worldwide Veterinary
Service, 2022). Nowadays people are thinking more and more about getting a new pet
but it is known that it is not an easy decision to make; there are many aspects to take
into account before, such as money, time, space, etc. Moreover, an even more
important aspect to take into account is how to get a pet, there are two options: buying
or adopting. There are lots of charitable institutions, shelters in the world where animals
are cared for and fed while waiting for someone to adopt them and give them love and
a house; on the other side, there are places where animals are sold, kept in cages and
abused, they are generally sold at high prices just because they are pedigree animals.
So let me ask you a question, will you buy or adopt a pet? There are many reasons
why adoption should be your answer and I will explain them here.
To begin with, one important argument about why adopting is better than buying an
animal is that by adopting a street animal we are saving a life. Each year, it is
estimated that more than one million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the
world, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider
adoption when looking for a pet (The Humane Society of The United States, 2022). In
Argentina, animals die in the streets from being run over, from hunger, they freeze in
the winter and suffer from heat exhaustion when temperatures soar in the summer;
they also die because they are abused, etc. The number of euthanized and dead
animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying
them. When you adopt dogs and cats or any animal, you save a loving animal by
making them part of your family and giving them a home. Also, by adopting you open
up shelter space for another animal that might desperately need it. This may be the
biggest reason of all. You’re giving a dog, cat, horse, or any animal, a second chance
at life. In their past life, some may have been abused, abandoned, or had to fend for
themselves on the streets alone. By adopting, you are giving the dog a safe and loving
home in which it can learn to be a happy and a healthy animal again and not die alone
in the streets.
Furthermore, by adopting a pet you are preventing animal overpopulation.
Overpopulation is a problem that results in thousands of animals being killed each
month and year (Earth and Animal Facts A-Z, 2022). There are many reasons for this,
