A medicine is a chemical substance which cures the disease and does not cause addiction.
Whereas ,a drug is also used to cure the disease but is causes addiction and has serious
side effects.
2 What is chemotherapy?
The treatment of disease by chemicals is called Chemotherapy.
3 What are the the different Basis for the classification of Drugs?
a) Based on Pharmacological effect.
b) Based on Drug action.
c)Based on Chemical structure
d)Based on Molecular targets.
4 What are receptors?
These are macromolecules which are crucial to communication system in the body
5 What are Antagonists?
Dugs that binds the receptors site and inhibits its natural function are called Antagonists.
6 What are Agonists?
Drugs that mimic the natural messenger by switching on the receptors are
called Agonists.
7 What are Antacids?Give examples.
These are the medicines which removes excess acid in the Stomach (or) the medicines
which neutralises excess of acid in the stomach and raise the PH level.
Eg:Sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3),Mixture of Magnesium hydroxide,Mg(OH)2and
Aluminium hydroxide Al(OH)3.
8 Excess of antacids should not be taken. Why?
Intake of excess antacids increases the production of more acid in the
stomach. Therefore antacids should be taken in required amount.
9 What are antihistamines? Give examples.
Antihistamines are the drugs which inhibit the function of histamines.
Eg. Brompheneramine, chlorpheneramine, cetrizine, terfenadine, seldane, etc.
10 What are the functions of histamine in the body?
Histamine stimulates the release of pepsin and hydrochloric acid.
Topic: CHEMISTRY IN EVERY DAY LIFE
, 11 In what way antihistamines are different from antacids in the function?
Antihistamines stimulate the release of pepsin and hydrochloric acid whereas antacids
neutralises the acids produced in the body.
12 What are tranquilizers? Give examples.
These are neurologically active drugs used to treat stress, mild or even severe mental
diseases, anxiety. They form essential components of sleeping pills.
Eg. Chlordiazepoxide, meprobamate, equanil, veronal, amytal, Nembutal,
luminal, Seconal,barbutyrates.
13 What are antidepressants? Give examples.
These are drugs which are used to treat depression patients.
Eg. Iproniazid, phenelzine.
14 What is the cause for depression among the patients?
Low level production of NORADRENALINE causes depression. Noradrenaline is
mood changer.
15 What are analgesics? Mention types of analgesics.
These are drugs which are used to reduce or abolish the pain without causing impairment
of consciousness, mental confusion or paralysis.
Types- 1) Non-narcotic analgesics (non-addictive).2) Narcotic analgesics.
16 What are non-narcotic analgesics? Give examples.
These are the pain killers which are used to reduce the arthritic pains. These are non
addictive. These drugs also have antipyretic properties .Ex Aspirin
Aspirin is also used to prevent the heart attack.
17 What are narcotic analgesics? Give examples.
Analgesics which induce sleep and relieve pain when used in small doses. When used in
higher doses may lead to Coma,Convulsions or even death. These are mainly used for
the relief of Postoperative pain,Cardiac pains of terminal Cancer.
These are the derivatives of Opium.
Ex:Morphin,Heroin,Codein.
18 What are antipyretics? Give an example.
These are used to reduce the body temperature (fever). Ex. Aspirin. Paracetamol.
19 Give the structure and IUPAC name of aspirin.
2-Acetoxy benzoic acid.
20 What are Antimicrobials? Give examples.
