COURSE PRELIMINARIES
a) Course name and code
COURSE NAME: PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH.
COURSE CODE: PEH 209.
b) Course overview
Environmental health is one of the most important aspects of primary prevention of diseases. The
community health assistant and all the other health workers have a responsibility to assist their
communities to improve their environment.
This course focuses on the components of environment and their effect on humans, water and
sanitation, appropriate methods of handling food, and the effects of housing on health. The final
section will focus on how the community health assistant should mobilize the community in the
control of vectors and pests in their environment.
c) Course Learning Outcomes
BROAD OBJECTIVE: To enable the learner promote health and prevent diseases
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
1. Apply basic knowledge to promote environmental health.
2. Observe environmental health activities that promote health.
3. Explain the importance of environment to community health
4. Describe water and sanitation in relation to health
5. Outline appropriate methods of handling food
6. Describe the effects of housing on health
7. Mobilise the community in the control of vectors and pests
