MODULE NAME: ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY/
ELECTRICAL MACHINES & CONTROL
HOURS: 74
CREDIT: 8
Module Purpose
The module has been designed to equip the learner with electrical engineering principles, practical skills and
attitudes required in maintenance of electro-medical, hospital plant and medical electronic equipment.
Module Outcomes
By the end of this module, the learner should be able to:
a) Demonstrate electrical manipulative skills required in maintenance of medical equipment.
b) Apply electrical principles in the maintenance and repair of electro – medical equipment

Theory
1. Three phase A.C. Constructional details of a 3 phase a.c. generators 10
generators (stator, rotor, slip-rings),
Generation of three phase E.M.F (special attention
to waveforms),
Three phase connections (star, delta),
Advantages of 3 phase over single-phase motors
2. Three phase A.C. Types of 3 phase motors (synchronous, 10
motors asynchronous/induction motors),
Construction details of induction motors (stator,
rotor – squirrel cage and wound rotor),
Working principle of three phase induction
motors (rotating field, electromagnetic induction),
Starting methods (direct-on-line, star delta, auto
transformer, resistance starting),
Applications (laundry machines, cold rooms and
mortuary),
Motor protection (overload protection, under
voltage protection, earth leakage, single phasing).
3. Transformers Classification transformers (single phase 10
transformers, three phase transformers),
Constructional details of single-phase
transformers,
