, Question 1
According to Coetzee et al (2019 :14) classroom management refers to the
wide variety of skills and techniques that educators use to keep learners
organised, orderly, focused, attentive, on task and academically attentive
during a lesson (Classroom management 2013 :1).
a. Mention four things in the classroom that an educator is expected to
manage. (8)
Student Behavior: Educators are responsible for managing student
behavior to ensure a positive and productive learning environment.
Instructional Materials: Teachers should manage the availability and
organization of instructional materials such as textbooks, worksheets, and
multimedia resources.
Time: Educators need to manage the allocation of time for different
activities and lessons to ensure that the curriculum is covered efficiently.
Classroom Layout: Managing the physical arrangement of the classroom,
including seating arrangements and access to resources, can impact the
learning experience.
b. Give one example for each of the things that you mentioned in (a) above.
(8)
Student Behavior: An example of managing student behavior is
implementing a classroom behavior plan with clear rules and
consequences. For instance, if a student consistently disrupts the class,
the teacher may have a progressive discipline system in place, starting
with a warning and escalating to parent-teacher conferences if necessary.
Instructional Materials: Managing instructional materials involves ensuring
that textbooks are distributed at the beginning of the school year, keeping
them organized in a designated area, and periodically checking their
condition to order replacements if needed.
Time: Teachers manage time by creating detailed lesson plans that
specify the duration of each activity. For example, a teacher may allocate
15 minutes for a warm-up exercise, 30 minutes for a lecture, and 20
minutes for group discussions.
Classroom Layout: Managing the classroom layout can involve arranging
desks in a way that promotes interaction and minimizes distractions. For
instance, the teacher may arrange desks in a U-shape to facilitate class
discussions and ensure everyone has a clear view of the board.
c. Describe two things that help the classroom to manage itself. (4)
