It is very traditional in India to eat with your hands as they feel eating is supposed to be a sensory experience. Eating with your fingers
stimulates five senses and they believe that by handling the food you become more conscious of the taste, textures and aromas. It is rude
for a host not to offer their guests food multiple times. Playing with food or moving it around the plate is unacceptable.
By Hinduism religion they do not eat Beef as it is seen as a sacred animal although non-hindu communities do eat beef. Muslim Indians do
not eat pork as pork is prohibited in Islam although in the Hindu religion they are allowed to consume pork.
We perceive that in India they may eat a lot of chicken korma or masala although this is not the case. There are many more dishes that
they would eat as their normal food compared to an Indian takeaway in the UK.
I shown pictures of a few popular Indian dishes such as; Idli which is eaten for breakfast, it is a southern Indian food. The dish is made from
batter of ground rice and lentils which is then steamed in circular moulds. Chloe bhature is one of the most popular Punjabi recipes, it is a
spiced curried chickpea dish and it is served with fried flour bread. Chloe stands for spicy curry that’s been made with white chickpeas and
bhatura is the fried flat bread it is served with. Rogan Josh is a signature recipe from the Kashmiri cuisine. In the UK the dish would be
made with lamb but in India it would be goat. There are a variety of savouries such as; Samosas are fried or baked with the inside
containing a savory filling such as spiced potatoes, peas, onions or lentils. Dosas come from southern India, although it is popular all over
India and it can be eaten for any meal of the day. It is similar to a pancake, it is made from fermented batter. Gajar Ka Halwa also known as
Gajrela is a sweet dessert that comes from Pakistan. It is a very popular dish made by cooking grated carrot with milk then adding sugar
and dried fresh fruits.
