DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS AND GIVE EXAMPLES:
(i) Prejudice (3)
-Prejudice encompasses the unreasonable feelings, opinions or attitudes,
especially of a hostile nature, directed against a group other than your own.
-Example: “I don‟t like Indians because they are shrewd”.
(ii) Stereotypes (3)
-A stereotype is a simple, rigid and generalised description of a person or group.
-When a stereotyped description is attached to a racial, cultural or national
group, there is often the group‟s implication that the characteristics are
genetically determined and so cannot be changed.
-Stereotypes influence people‟s perceptions of and behaviour towards different
groups.
-Example: “Fat people are lazy”, “Boxers are dumb”, The Japanese are intelligent”.
(iii) Racism (3)
-Racism is the belief that one‟s own race is superior to another.
-This belief is based on the false premise that physical attributes of a racial
group determine intellectual characteristics as well as social behaviour.
-Example Only white people can be scientists
(iv) Discrimination (3)
-This is the differential treatment of individuals or groups based on categories
such as race, ethnicity, gender, social class or exceptionality.
-Example: “Woman cannot enrol for engineering programmes:
(v) Multicultural education (3)
-Multicultural education is a broad concept that encompasses ethnic studies,
multiethnic education and antiracist education.
-It consists of educational reform that is designed to recast the school
environment so that many different kinds of groups, including ethnic groups,
women and learners with special needs will experience educational equality and
academic parity.
