THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
Introduction to the Nervous System
• The nervous system is divided into:
• Central nervous system (CNS)
• Brain
• Spinal cord
• Peripheral nervous system
• Cranial and spinal nerves
• Ganglia
• Peripheral portions of the autonomic nervous system

Introduction to the Nervous System
• The Central nervous system (CNS)
• Brain
• Spinal cord
• The CNS consists of:
• Gray matter – Aggregation of cell bodies of neurons within the CNS
• White matter – myelinated nerve cell processes or portions of processes
inside the CNS
• CNS is composes of large numbers of cells – neurons – bound
together by framework of supporting cells – neuroglia;
• Neuron – the fundamental, genetic, structural, functional and
trophic unit of the nervous system;
• Neuronal processes may be classified as
• Dendrites
• Axons
