Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. Today, I want to talk about some
intangible aspects that are crucial for your UPSC preparation. We often focus on
tangible things like what to study, how much to study, and how to manage time. But
it's equally important to understand the intangible qualities that can greatly
impact your preparation.
One of these qualities is a positive attitude. Your attitude is like a window
through which you see the world. If this window is dirty or clouded, your view will
be unclear. So, it's important to keep your attitude clean and bright.
Positive attitude vs. negative attitude:
Positive attitude: "I can"
Negative attitude: "I can't"
Having a positive attitude is essential because it allows you to see things from a
solution-oriented perspective. Instead of focusing on problems, you focus on
finding solutions. Additionally, positive attitude people see the good in others
and focus on their blessings rather than what's missing. They also focus on
possibilities rather than limitations.
Developing a positive attitude is crucial for UPSC preparation because it's not
just an exam, it's a life-changing journey. The syllabus is vast, the challenges
are immense, and the path is unpredictable. Having a positive attitude will help
you navigate through these obstacles and find new possibilities.
Let me share an example from my own life. When I was writing the UPSC mains, I
struggled to write exceptional answers. I was getting decent marks but not crossing
the threshold for higher scores. It was only when I developed a positive attitude
and believed in my abilities that I started to see improvement.
For every GS (General Studies) test I would score between 90 to 100 marks, but I
was not able to score above 100 marks. Even in my first and second attempts at the
UPSC mains, I couldn't achieve exceptional marks in my GS paper. Instead of
accepting this limitation, I told myself that I would score more than 450 marks in
the GS papers. I analyzed toppers' copies, made notes, and figured out the
important things for answer writing. This mindset of exploring possibilities helped
me score over 450 marks in the mains, which is one of the highest scores even
today. It is important to have this possibility mindset and always strive to
improve wherever you can because that is what will push you beyond the finish line.
One important aspect is to cultivate a conscious effort to think, speak, and act
positively. The success begins in your mind, and positive thoughts will shape your
actions and words. If you think and speak negatively, it will hold you back.
Speaking positively and being mindful of the words you use will reflect in your
actions and in your UPSC interview. However, thinking and speaking alone will not
help you. You must act on what you think and speak. Taking action every day is
crucial for success.
Building a positive attitude is important for motivation. It is the starting point
of your journey. You may face criticism from your parents and teachers, ridicule
from friends and peers, rejection, and doubts about your capabilities. These are
the moments when your attitude may be tested. But you have the power to control
your attitude, actions, thoughts, and words. It is important to consciously apply
all the things discussed here.
I will continue to share more about attitude, as well as other important aspects
like discipline, motivation, and consistency. If you have any questions, feel free
to ask. Take care!
