COURSE DESCRIPTION This course covers more advanced pathology, signs, symptoms, incidence, methods of diagnosis, treatment, and medical and surgical conditions. In this course students are covering disrupted respiratory, cardiovascular, vascular, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, neurologic, musculoskeletal and integumentary functions. METHOD OF DELIVERY VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing is provided as a blended course. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION Lecture which includes but is not limited to powerpoint presentation, groups discussions, audio/video presentations, visible body animations, and clicker technology for remediation and testing. ESTIMATED TIME FOR OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL PREPARATION Students will be required to complete reading assignments, homework, and prepare for quizzes and exams outside of class hours. The minimum estimated time for Outside School Preparation Hours (OSPH) is five (5) hours for each credit hour of lecture/laboratory. 9.5 quarter credit hours that includes 47.5 OSPH CLOCK AND/OR QUARTER CREDIT HOURS AWARDED VN 300: Medical Surgical Nursing II Clock hours: 96; quarter credit hours: 9.5 VN 320 MS II: Internal Clinical Experience – Clock hours: 24; (Total clinical hours for Module III 278 hours; students will participate in 24 hours of internal clinical experiences in VN 320 MS II) COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Apply the role of the medical/surgical nurse in relation to health promotion and illness to adults with alterations in endocrine, reproductive, respiratory, integumentary, hematologic, neurological, immunologic, cardiovascular, and urologic systems, as well as shock, cerebrovascular accidents, and spinal cord injuries. 2. Examine the importance of biopsychosocial, pathophysiological and pharmacological concepts in health care acknowledging the adaptive, preventative, restorative and health education measures to maintain optimal functioning for clients with the above system alterations. 3. Utilizing evidence-based practice, develop and implement appropriate plans of care and client/family teaching plans for clients with disease conditions of systems found in course objective number one (1). 4. Apply knowledge and recognize specific nursing assessment skills related to the disease conditions of systems found in course objective number one (1). 5. Relate the importance of evaluation and the role it plays in the improvement of quality client care. 6. Identify nursing diagnoses, goals, nursing interventions based on evidence-based practice, nursing outcomes and evaluation criteria appropriate for clients with system problems. 7. Discuss etiologies, risks, signs and symptoms, treatment modalities and diagnostics in relation to the system alterations found in medical/surgical clients. 2 Revised: 12.20.2022 VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing II STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Apply assessment skills related to acute and chronic disease conditions. 2. Identify the relationships between acute and chronic diseases including clinical presentation and nursing management of patients. 3. Integrate the nursing process and evidence-based practice in the delivery of patient care and in patients with acute and chronic health problems. 4. Interpret collected clinical data responses and outcomes to therapeutic interventions to plan appropriate nursing care. 5. Analyze disease etiologies, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and treatment modalities. UNIT OF CREDIT Academic credit is measured in quarter or clock hours. Typically, one (1) hour of instructional time is defined as a fifty-minute period. Credits earned at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts are for determining progress towards program completion only. The credits are not typically transferable to another school, college or university. Students may only attend the class in which they are enrolled. Therefore, AM students are not permitted to attend PM classes, and PM students are not permitted to attend AM classes. No exceptions. ATTENDANCE 1. Students are expected to attend all classes as scheduled. All efforts should be made to not miss any class. 2. Students who are tardy more than 15 minutes for class are considered to be absent. Students who leave class more than 15 minutes early are also considered to be absent. Students who arrive late from breaks more than 15 minutes are considered to be absent. 3. Students who arrive to class 1-15 minutes late are considered to be tardy. Students who also leave class 1-15 minutes before the end of the class are also considered to be tardy. Students who arrive 1-15 minutes late from break are also considered to be tardy. 4. A student being tardy three (3) times is the equivalent of one absence. 5. Students who miss a significant portion of any course within a program will be expelled from the program. ABSENCES The following absences are the ONLY EXCUSED ABSENCES: ● Medical Emergency: Must provide documentation from a physician. ● Jury Duty: Must provide court summons. ● Family Emergency: If you are the sole responsible person for a child or dependent adult, and there is a medical emergency you must provide written documentation from a physician. ● Bereavement Leave: Documentation of the death or funeral service. ● Subpoenaed Court Date: Must provide court documents. ● Naturalization/Citizenship Appointment: Must provide proof of appointment. ● Mandatory Work Orientation: Must provide proof of orientation from the supervisor. ***Medical clearance must be provided and approved by the program coordinator prior to the student being allowed to return to the classroom or clinical setting. *** ALL absences must be made up within 30 days. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that a make-up plan of action for each absence is completed within seven (7) days and documented on didactic make-up form. All make-up forms must be filled out completely and accurately with all required signatures for all missed hours prior to credit of make-up hours is granted. ● If you miss one (1) day, your grade will not be changed. ● If you miss a 2nd day, your grade is lowered 10%. ● If you miss a 3rd day, your grade is lowered an additional 10%. 4 Revised: 12.20.2022 VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing II ● If you miss a 4th day, you have failed your Course and will be automatically expelled from the program. *Student grade reductions will remain in effect for all absences (excused and unexcused) regardless of completion of makeup hours. CLASS EXPECTATION Students are responsible to prepare for class by completing the assigned readings, activities, and participating in the class discussion. PARTICIPATION Students are responsible to actively participate in lectures and discussions. It is expected that corresponding textbook chapters will be read prior to attending class. PROFESSIONALISM It is expected that during your time as a nursing student you display professionalism. This is defined as the following: complying with the school dress code, displaying respect towards your instructors, administrators and fellow students, and actively working collaboratively with others. The nursing student acts with honesty and integrity as he/she learns basic nursing knowledge and skills. The nursing student demonstrates a positive and appropriate attitude. ONLINE CLASSROOM AND CLINICAL PROTOCOLAND ETIQUETTE The following requirements will be enforced whenever students are participating in an online classroom environment for both didactic and clinical courses: 1. Students must be visible on camera during class time (including if calling in with a phone for audio to the classroom meeting). Visible means the student’s entire face must be clearly observable on camera and unobstructed. Cameras are not allowed to be pointing down at the top of the head. 2. No phones will be allowed in the testing area at any time during an exam. 3. Students who do not respond to an instructor inquiry will be considered tardy, and if a student does not respond within 15 minutes the student will be considered absent. 4. Students who need to take a short restroom break must notify the instructor in the chat box when they leave and return to the classroom. Students who are gone for more than 15 minutes will be marked absent for the day. 5. Students who need to attend to children’s needs must notify the instructor in the chat box when they leave and return to the classroom. Students who are gone for more than 15 minutes will be marked absent for the day. If there is a family emergency, please notify the instructor of the situation promptly. 6. Students are allowed to log out and back into the classroom during their lunch break. 7. Students are not allowed to talk out loud during an exam. 8. Students may not wear a mask during an exam. 9. The student’s background behind the camera must be accurate to the physical setting. 10. Students may not be driving in a car, shopping, watching TV, using the internet, texting, making phone calls, engaging in conversations with others, at a doctor appointment, at work or any other 5 Revised: 12.20.2022 VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing II activity which would be distracting from the instructor’s teaching while participating in a class or alternative hours. Students engaging in this behavior will be marked absent for the course. 11. Students must be dressed as per the dress code located in the syllabi for clinical courses and comply with the dress code for didactic courses as determined by the campus. 12. Students are not allowed to participate in alternative hours and didactic courses at the same time. 13. All participants in the virtual classroom will refrain from disrupting the flow, focus and concentration of the classroom by adhering to the following: a. Students will make an effort to designate class time areas in their homes which are free from disruption by pets, members of the household and other background distractions. b. Students will also refrain from allowing pets or other people being shown on camera. Students are in class and will respect the privacy and learning environment of others in the class. c. Students must be sitting up in desk chairs, table or couch and should not be laying down or in bed during lecture or anytime a student is in the online classroom d. Students should be mindful of what will be shown on the camera. Avoid displaying anything which might be inappropriate, offensive to others, violent, any content that is drug or alcohol related or anything of a private nature which a student would not want others to see or that would not be appropriate in the residential classroom, at work or in a hospital or at a clinical site. 14. Students who unexpectedly lose their internet connection are required to do the following: a. Notify their instructor via text message. b. Obtain the Google Meet phone in number to join by phone. If the student is unable to join by phone the instructor must be notified immediately. c. If the student misses a significant portion of the class, the student will be required to watch the recording via lecture as determined by their instructor. d. If possible, for extended loss of internet time the student will provide proof of the internet outage to the instructor. e. If the student is not present in the classroom for over 15 minutes and has not notified the instructor, the student will be marked absent for the class. CELL PHONE POLICY Cell phones must be turned off in class and clinical settings at all times. Students may use their cell phones on campus before or after class and during breaks in the posted designated areas or outside of the school. For an emergency contact, students may use the school or clinical facility’s phone number. Students who are not in compliance with this policy are subject to disciplinary probation, suspension or termination at the discretion of the school administration. EVALUATION ADMINISTRATION POLICY All electronic devices must be turned completely off during the administration of all forms of evaluation and displayed within the instructor’s view. All non-electronic personal belongings will be stored out of all class members’ view, including the instructor’s, by concealing all instructional notations and storing belongings under the chair and/or desk. There will be no talking or questions during the administration of evaluations. Forms of evaluation include but are not limited to: quizzes, tests and examinations. Students who are not in 6 Revised: 12.20.2022 VN 300 Medical Surgical Nursing II compliance with this policy are subject to disciplinary probation, suspension, or termination at the discretion of the school administration. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All students enrolled in classes at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts are expected to maintain integrity in all academic pursuits. These include the writing of papers, examinations, assignments, records and other details relative to the assessment of student performance. Integrity and honesty is a quality essential of all medical workers. The faculty does not want students who are dishonest since that attitude and perspective will put patient’s health and lives at risk. Any dishonesty with regard to these matters is subject to censure or penalty (including but not limited to expulsion) in proportion to the seriousness of the action. Dishonesty includes: 1. Copying answers of another person or persons during an examination. 2. Secreting (hiding) of unauthorized materials to assist in an examination. 3. Plagiarism, taking as one’s own statements those of another without giving due credit to the author, even though such material may have been restated in one’s own words. 4. Fraudulently obtaining test information, falsifying records, transcripts, recommendations or other documents indicative of student qualifications. Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts also considers the following to be serious breaches of integrity: 1. Falsification of patient records. 2. Breach of patient confidentiality. 3. Taking property or drugs from clinical sites or patients. 4. Felony convictions. 5. Endangering patients due to psychological impairment or by being under the influence of alcohol, or drugs. 6. Falsification of assignments that are to be conducted on patients or members of the community. 7. Having someone else complete your written assignments and submitting them as your work. In proportion to the seriousness of the action, censure, and penalty may extend from a failing grade in the work in question to dismissal from the program. Ordinarily the responsibility for resolving the issues lies with the faculty member and the student. UNIFORMS AND CLINICALAPPEARANCE Students are representatives of Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts and are also presenting themselves as a beginning health care professional and potential, future employee. Students are required to maintain a professional appearance in regard to neatness and personal hygiene. While in attendance at a clinical site, a student must adhere to both Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts policies and the designated clinical facility policies. ● All students attending class on campus are required to wear school-designated scrubs and white professional medical shoes (non-porous material, leather or pleather, that can be easily cleaned and polished) during didactic, laboratory, and at the clinical site. Students may wear a white short or long-sleeved undershirt without visible designs for additional warmth under the uniform. No other colors are permitted.
