Discuss thoroughly the statement "Imprisonment in Caribbean society is a waste of time". (20
marks).

Within the Caribbean society, it is customary for standards of appropriate as well as
intolerable behaviour to be established. Certain behavioural tendencies are considered
acceptable to be the ideal prerequisite for model performance, these are known as norms.
Once standards are established, it is the role of law enforcement officials to promote and
uphold conformity. Defiant behaviour is defined as actions that oppose social norms that are
accepted by society. A crime is any deviant act that breaks the law of the land; these include
murder, poisoning, and kidnapping, as examples. Laws serve as a deterrent to these criminal
behaviours in society. Punishments are imposed on those who fail to conform to the legal and
political system. The act of imprisoning someone or the state of being imprisoned is referred
to as imprisonment. Within the Caribbean society those who commit criminal acts such as:
drug possession, assault, and extortion among many others are sentenced to imprisonment.
The purpose of imprisonment is so convicted criminals echo their action due to the
consequences placed upon them by the Justice system. When others see the severity of a
convicted person's punishment, it serves as a deterrent to others from committing similar
crimes. Though within Caribbean society, whilst imprisonment has aided in the restriction of
many individuals from committing crime, many also are not affected by the act of
imprisonment. The effectiveness of the imprisonment system within Caribbean society has
long been argued by many. Whilst some acknowledge that prisons aid in the isolation of
criminals, and the promotion of social control, many argue that prison is not effective due to
the high risks that are created due to being imprisoned.

One of the primary benefits of imprisonment in Caribbean society is the isolation of criminals
from society. Given the fear of the murderer repeating the crime, the public may not feel safe
allowing the murderer to socialize with them without paying the consequences of their
actions. Criminals must be separated from the rest of society. It safeguards society against
individuals who exhibit destructive tendencies and endanger others. An article by Jamaica
Gleaner entitled ‘ Jamaica recorded 1,498 murders in 2022’ was published on January 3,
2023. The public would not be safe if the perpetrators for the murders were to continue to
walk amongst them. When inside prison they are unable to harm their victims as well as give
them the time to properly reflect upon their actions.
