Piaget’s research was centered around schemas and cognitive development. He proposed that the knowledge that children acquire is grouped into schemas which either modify existing schemas, create a new schema or merge with the current schema. He also proposed that cognitive development consists of 4 stages; sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operation stage. With regards to Jamie’s development, her behavior indicated a direct link to what she was exposed to in her environment. The excessiveness of her behavior indicates that the information she received such as interaction with her peers, added to her schema and created new schemas of hopelessness and isolation. Paiget believed that children viewed the world in their own understanding based on what they experienced in the world. This theory could apply to Jamie’s development because of the violence she experienced in her home and as a result, caused her to act out violence to various non-violent situations. 2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Jamie’s development. Vygotsky believed that development was influenced by culture. His Sociocultural Theory included principles of the More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). MKO refers to someone who has a greater understanding or a higher skill level than the learner, such as a teacher. The ZPD refers to a difference between what a child can achieve independently, called actual development, and what she can achieve with the guidance of an adult, called the level of potential development. (FamousP, 2020) In Jamie’s development, she does not have a MKO that is teaching her within her ZPD. Her culture has heavily influenced the way that she is developing. 3. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth and early childhood stages of development could have been influenced by a nurturing environment. This includes her being rewarded with positive reinforcement, such as a hug from her mother, for new tasks she learned and performed correctly or the ability to try. Jamie’s mother could have supported her by encouraging her to use her motor skills. Additionally, Jamie’s mother state of physical well-being during pregnancy could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during birth. Jamie’s mother’s age and nutritional status during pregnancy may also have contributed to Jamie’s development. However, such was not the case. 4. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth and early childhood stages of development could have been influenced by the fact that she lived in an environment filled with violence, fear and poverty. Damaging effects of this type of environment can be seen in the cognitive development of children. It could have affected the way Jamie learns at school by lowering her academic achievem
