WEEK 1 – FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
Based on operant conditioning and the cognitive model by Beck
You choose a situation in which you were not happy about your behavior, and by
zooming in to it’s different components, you try to find out what the function of your
behavior is.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
Main goal of FA: to discover the reinforces, because they lead to increase of
behavior, and the maintaining factors, because those prohibit you from making new
experiences.
If you are aware of these, you can start tackling them.
FA: What is the functionality of my behavior?
Working hypothesis: How do reinforcers maintain the problem?
Theoretical model: Is there an empirical model describing this connection?
How can you ever come to a diagnosis?
- Ask your client whether they recognize themselves in the model?
Don’t forget -S+ and ~S+ (positive learning opportunities you miss out on)
Most of the time, that is where the vicious circle of not being able to change your
behavior closes. By doing things in a specific way, we prohibit ourselves from
learning that other behaviors will lead to a better outcome.
, It’s useful to train ourselves to think in short term and long term consequences when
it comes to the functional analysis.
By categorizing in short term and long term, you sometimes discover that all of your
wins are short-time, but your losses are permanent.
