Lord of the Flies Review, Lord of the Flies (2023/2024) Already Graded A Why does Golding make Piggy consistently reference his auntie? To demonstrate his connection to the outside world and show him as civilization. Why is Ralph automatically given the leadership of the boys? He blew the conch and first attempted to establish order in a hectic tragedy. Explain the significance of the setting. he importance of the setting is that is isolates the boys from any contact with other human society. This allows the boys to develop without any input from adults. The progression from little boys to savages seems to be a natural occurrence. It is something that comes, a the Lord of the Flies says, from inside the boys. I suppose any setting that would isolate the boys from the rest of society could work to promote Golding's message. However, a tropical island is supposed to an idyllic place, free of stress and natural beauty. The contrast between the beautiful place and the development of the boys into savages seems all the more ironic given the contrast between nature and humanity. What is the importance of Roger throwing stones in chapter 5? It demonstrates the savagery within the boys that had been previously well hidden. List multiple ways that Simon compares to Christ. - Simon gives the boys fruit they could not reach like Jesus fed thousands food. -He realizes the real beast is inside them -He is pure and innocent with no desire to hunt and kill -Like Jesus, he is tempted by Satan, as the Lord of the Flies tries to manipulate Simon, and the Lord of the Flies represents Satan. Explain the comparisons between government forms and leadership on the island. Jacks dictatorship versus Ralph's democracy. Jacks D: Controls the boys telling them what to do. Does not care for the littleuns. Ralph D:First gov formed. Conch, voting, cares for the littluns still, has goals other than savagery. What causes the "shutter" or "curtain" that makes Ralph lose focus? fear List multiple biblical allusions throughout the novel. Prophesies his own death in chapter 7, as Jesus does throughout the New Testament Feeds his followers fruit in chapter 3 much like Jesus feeds the multitudes in the New Testament. Withdraws to his secret place in the forest as Jesus withdraws to the wilderness to pray. Understands the truth about fear, evil, and human nature, but is slain as he attempts to share it. When are the boys most savage? (What action?) Killing or the reancement of the killing Why does Golding include details about Percival's incantation of his address? To show the deep rooted civilization in the boys and how illustrating how the place that was safe and beast free was being forgotten. How does the burden of leadership change Ralph? It causes Ralph to feel more responsibility for the boys lives, peace on the island, and rescue. At the end of the novel, why does Ralph weep? He cries for the loss of innocence of the boys on the island. Ralph cries because he realizes that he almost dies at the hand of Jack and Roger. Also, Ralph is relieved to see the naval officer. He realizes that he is saved, but he cries for the loss of his friend Piggy. With which literary device does Golding close his novel? Symbolism??? "Course I'm frightened. Who wouldn't be?" Ralph "We've seen the beast with our own eyes. No - we weren't asleep." Eric (from Samneric) "You'll get back to where you came from" Simon "I was with him when he found the conch. I was with him before anyone else was" Piggy "My poor, misguided child, do you think you know better than I do?" Lord of the Flies "Who'll join my tribe and have fun?" Jack "They are going to hunt you tomorrow" Samneric "I should have thought that a pack of British boys would have been able to put up a better show than that" Naval Officer "What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?" Piggy "I don't care what they call me so long as they don't call me what they used to call me at school" Piggy "I'd like to put on war-paint and be savage. But we must keep the fire burning" Ralph "I'm not going to play any longer. Not with you" Jack "See? See? That's what you'll get... There isn't a tribe for you anymore!" Jack After all we aren't savages really, and being rescued isn't a game" Ralph "I thought they wanted the conch" Piggy "We'll leave this, for the beast" Jack "We saw your smoke. What have you been doing? Having a war or something? -Explain significance Naval Officer; In the final chapter, Jack sets the jungle on fire to smoke Ralph out of hiding. Just when Ralph is surrounded by savages on the beach, their hunt is interrupted by the arrival of a naval officer. Ironically, Jack's act of savagery is the cause of their finally being rescued. The naval officer, who is at war himself, thinks that the children are just playing a game, another example of irony. "You let the bloody fire go out" ralph "What if, what if the beast is really us?" Simon "Kill the pig, spill his blood" Jack and the hunters Piggy's glasses- Symbolism Knowledge and civilization in society unclouded by childlike thoughts and savagery. signal fire- Symbolsim Connection to civilization, safety, the hope of being rescued. the conch- Symbolism Civilization, order, political legitimacy, democracy the "Lord of the Flies"- Symbolism Evilness or symbolism the jungle- symbolism Death, decay, and darkness being the home of the beast Which theme?
