Trends determining the learning needs of our time:
1. Instant communication:
Communication is possible because of highly developed technology and it
should influence our schools, homes and work places. Our homes will re-

technological way and we need to become familiar with these types of
knowledge systems and the effect of technology. This will keep us up to date
with what is happening in the world around us.

3. A world without economic borders:
Focus is to move to a single market world economy. The focus has moved
from products and technology to skills people have developed.

4. Five different routes to the next society:
Preparations for a single world economy are already in the pipeline.
The suggested national routes to a better future:
-The continued leadership of America
-The rebirth of Europe
-The rise of the Tiger economies
-The resurgence of China
-The rise of India

5. Internet commerce and learning:
The internet allows people to communicate trade and acquire knowledge
instantly. This has led to new forms of organisations emerging that will
transform both information and service on demand.

6. The new service society:
This trend represents a move away from an industrial society to a more
service-orientated society. Computers and robots manufacture products
instead of workers. This means fewer people will work in factories in future.
The new era places the power in the hands of the individual and they are in
control of his/her education. The school system will have to focus on
promoting professions such as brokers, engineers, lawyers.

7. The marriage of big and small:
The size of an organisation used to be important but size is no longer a
prerequisite for success. A number of small businesses have already made
