Homework 7 Part 1: “The Yellow Wallpaper”- Answer the following questions in responses at least 4 sentences long. Use specific examples from the story where you are able.  Pretend that you are a psychologist. Diagnose what you think is the matter with the narrator. I believe that she has went through a severe period of post-partum depression after having their baby. I think that her husband john who is a doctor has good intentions but his treatment of absolute rest isn’t helping her at all only hurting her. John wants her to stay inside and not work, write even though she was a writer, not take care of the baby but only rest and get fresh air. I think with her depression and being made to stay in her room with nothing to do it has let her mind would and she’s paranoid and starts hallucinating.  How can the story represent the struggle for women’s liberation? To help answer this, try to look at the bigger picture of the narrator’s struggle (What do John, the room, the phantom, etc. represent about women oppression?) This story is like a hostage case to me compared to how todays views are and the rights women have now. I think the narrator having some sort of a mental illness and being a woman that is married to a high standing physician in this time period really makes her unable to make any of her own choices.
