LECTURE - INTRODUCTION TO BIOMECHANICS - KINEMATICS
Biomechanics
- Kinematics
- Kinetics
- Kinesiology
Kinematics vs Kinetics
- Kinematics - describing of motion (displacement, velocity, acceleration)
- Kinetics - analysis of forces and torques that cause motion [cannot see physically, but can measure eg. force plates]
- An analysis of both components is necessary to proper assess a person
- Analysis of human movement can be either qualitative or quantitative
○ Biomedical researchers rely on quantitative techniques to answer questions related to mechanisms
○ Physiotherapists and other clinicians rely more on qualitative analysis
Tools for Measuring Human Movement Quantities
- Videography
- Movement Monitoring Systems
Other Assessment Tools
○ Goniometer or electrogoniometer
○ Accelerometer
- Force plates – measures ground reaction forces.
- Electromyography (EMG) – measures muscle activities.
Joint Movement Terminology
- When a human body is in anatomical reference position, all joint angles are zero
- Three planes of movement:
a. Sagittal plane movements (anterior-posterior) [front - back]
b. Frontal plane movements (medio-lateral) [toward body - away from body]
c. Transverse plane movement (rotation)
