The Relationship Between Smartphone use and Sleep

Introduction (516 words)

Sleep is an unconscious state in which the body renews, repair and develop itself. Sleep

has always been viewed as one of the most basic necessities of human health. An average person

normally needs 8 hours of sleep to avoid tiredness during the day and perform well physically

and mentally. Sleep deprivation is becoming an important health issue worldwide and the

negative effect of this phenomenon are multiple. A lack of sleep can lead to emotional imbalance,

low concentration, and a weak immune system (Duygu & Bulent,2019). Because sleep is an

important factor that affects personal health, it is very important to investigate factors that could

harm it.

There are a lot of factors that can harm sleep quality and quantity, however the role of

mobile usage in affecting sleep problems has been the focus of researches in recent years (Duygu

& Bulent,2019). Thanks to technological advancement, smartphones enable people to have

internet access, view a lot of media content, and communicate online with friends and family.

Nowadays, almost everyone uses a smartphone. A study conducted by Gras (2015) showed that

85% of Dutch residents owned a smartphone and that 61% of Dutch people had access to a

tablet.

A high rate of availability of smartphones can have negative effects on sleep. According

to Duygu & Bulent (2019), using a smartphone before bedtime can change the sleeping time and

shorten the sleeping period. Smartphone usage interferes with sleep through increase wakefulness

caused by the bright light of smartphone devices (Duygu & Bulent, 2019). Moreover, a study by

Noree et al (2017) found a correlation between smartphone usage and the disruption of the

production of melatonin which in turn can cause the misalignment of the circadian rhythm.
