Interpersonal communication - transaction and involves mutual influence to manage
human relationships.
Therapeutic communication - interpersonal communication with a therapeutic intent
requires positive interpersonal communication.
Relationship - Ongoing connection made with another person through interpersonal
communication.
Therapeutic relationship – Constructive, purposeful relationship focused on the needs of
the client.
Phases of the relationship by Hildegard Peplau:
- Orientation Phase
- Working Phase
- Termination Phase
Communication – the process of acting on information
Human communication – the process of making sense of the world and sharing that sense
with others through verbal/nonverbal communication
Impersonal communication – occurs when we treat people as objects and where respond
to their roles rather than who they are as people
Other-oriented – to be aware of the thoughts, needs, experiences, personality, emotions,
motives, desires, culture and goals of your communication partners while still
maintaining your own integrity
Mass communication – one person issuing the same message to many people at once
Public communication – when a speaker addresses a large audience in person
Small-group communication – when a group of 3-15 people meet to interact with a
common purpose
Components of communication
- Source – the senders of messages
o Encode – put ideas, thoughts and feelings into a code
o Decode – interpret ideas, thoughts and feelings from the code
- Message – the verbal/non-verbal content being delivered from sender to receiver
- Channel – the method of transmission of the message
- Receiver – the person who decodes the message

- Noise – the interferences that keeps a message from being understood and
achieving its intended effect
o Literal noise – actual and physical sound
o Psychological noise – internal and distracting thoughts keeping you from
concentrating on the message
- Feedback – the response to the message; verbal/non-verbal, intended/unintended
- Context – the situation in which your communication is delivered
o Physical – size of space, temperature, number of people
o Temporal – time of day, moment in history
o Social or psychological – formal vs informal, social context, dinner table vs
classroom
o Cultural and language – cultural traditions or rituals
Models of communication – allows us to visualize steps within the process of
communication
- Transfer model – one directional message
- Interaction model – two way process where feedback is incorporated
- Transaction model – simultaneous interaction or a transaction between two people

Interpersonal communication principles
- Interpersonal communication connects us to others and is not optional
- Interpersonal communication is irreversible
- Interpersonal communication is complicated
o Referring to symbols that need to be decoded
o Messages are not always interpreted as we intend
- Interpersonal communication is governed by implicit or explicit rules
o Implicit rules – learnt rules from experiencing and observing others
o Explicit rules – clearly communicated (e.g., syllabus)
- Interpersonal communication involves both content and relationship dimensions
o Content – information
o Relationship message – how the message or content is said within a
relationship
o Metacommunication – accurately decoding unspoken or verbalized meta-
messages help you understand what people really mean
Intrapersonal communication – communication with oneself or “thinking”
Self-Concept – your subjective description of who you think you are filtered through
your own perception
- Attitude – likes and dislikes
- Beliefs - ways in which you structure your understanding of reality – true or false
- Value – enduring concepts of good and bad – right and wrong
Mindfulness – ability to think consciously about what you are doing and experiencing
Self-reflexiveness – thinking of what we are doing as we are doing it
Self-awareness – understanding who you are
Material self – possessions, body, physical
Social self – the way you act depending on context of interactions
Spiritual self – the essence of your feelings about yourself along with your thoughts and
values
Self-fulfilling prophecy – what people believe about themselves become true because
they expect it to come true
