Coffee is produced in Ghana. The distance covered to transport Coffee from Ghana to the
U.S is 9,882 kilometres. Coffee is an international food-based as it is transported from an
international country. Transporting, Sorting, washing and storage are key energy inputs that
humans provide in the growth of coffee.
Impacts our food purchase on the environment or economy
Food purchase negatively impacts the environment. First, the purchase triggers air
pollution from waste products, packaging and transportation—coral reefs bleached causes air
pollution such that the global temperature rises to trigger dangerous gasses. Food purchases
production creates greenhouse gas emissions, and this endangers water organisms, plants and
fish. Increased food production has led to the disappearance of coral reefs that supported
marine species and biodiversity. There is also increased food waste in the environment, and
this causes unfavourable climatic change. According to Klabin et al. (2016), food waste
estimates 6% of the greenhouse gas emitted in the atmosphere, ending human life.
Besides, food purchase emanates from livestock digestion which increases methane
emissions. Methane is regarded as potent and detrimental even though it fertilizes food
production. Research has it that methane contributes to 10% of the greenhouse emission in
the environment (Klabin et al., 2016). Farmers use methane to facilitate food production as
the component is a strong proponent of biodiesel and ethanol. Food purchase triggers water
pollution; for instance, microplastics used to cover the food products. Factories and
consumers' malpractices such as the disposition of plastics to the water bodies endangers
freshwater species, disrupting the ecosystem.
