Natural Selection Simulation at PHET
Exploration of the Simulation
Access the simulation and explore the settings. Answer the following questions.
1. What are some VARIABLES that you have control over in the simulation?
In the above, we have control over variables such as selecting the environmental factors
influencing stimulation such as wolves, food, habitat, and population mutations.
2. What happens to the bunny population if a friend is never added? What happens when
you add a friend?
For the bunny population, the addition of a friend means an impact on the characteristics as the
presence of the friend is the assurance of positivity such as reproduction but the elimination of
the friend will lead to the death of the bunny.
, SURNAME 2
3. What happens when you add food as a selection factor?
The addition of food increases the lives of the bunny as food sustains life and brings about
nourishment.
4. What is the difference between the arctic and equator environment?
In the arctic environment, there is snow thus resulting in cold temperatures. In the equatorial
regions, there is dust and sand and the environment is hot.
5. What is a genetic mutation? What are the three mutations you can add to your bunny
population?
Genetic Mutation is the basis of species diversity among organisms. Biologically it is defined as
the alteration of nucleotide systems in the genomes that exist in an organism. Types that can be
included in the bunny population include;
1.chromosomal mutation- encompasses the change of chromosome structure.
2.Point mutation- concerned with the change in a single nucleotide.
3. Frameshift mutation- concerned with the addition and deletion of nucleotides.
