What is prose fiction? Something invented, imagined, or feigned (pretended)
to be true
What is a novel? - Long fiction narrative with a complicated plot
- May have one main plot and one or more sub plots
that develop with the main plot
- Made up of chapters
What is a short story? - Fictitious narrative compressed into one unit of time,
place, and action
- Deals with single character interest, a single emotion
or series of emotions called forth by a single
- Distinguished from a novel because of its
compression

What is biography? Story of a certain person’s life written by another who
knows the subject well

Narrative poetry
tells a story, often with various subcategories.
Epic - Long narrative poem of the largest proportions
- About a hero concerning the beginning,
continuance, and the end of events that has great
significance on tribal or national significance
Metric poem - Narrative poem tells a story of adventures, love, and
chivalry
- Typical hero: knight on a quest
Ballad - Simplest type of narrative poetry
- Short narrative poem telling a single incident in a
simple meter and stanzas
- Meant to be sung
Popular ballad Wide workmanship telling some simple incidents of
adventure, cruelty, passion, or superstition, an incident,
that shows the primary instincts of man influenced by the
restraint of modern civilization
Modern or artistic - Created by poet in imitation of the folk ballad, make
use of many of its devices and conventions
Metrical allegory Extended narrative that carries a second meaning along
worth the surface story
Lyric poetry
- Very personal in nature
- Expresses author’s own thoughts, feelings, moods,
and reflections in musical language
- Came from musical instru. “lyre”
Ode - Some length, serious subject and dignified style.
- Most majestic of the lyric poem
- Written in a spirit of praise of some persons or things
Elegy - Written for the death of the friend of a poet
- Ostensible (apparent) purpose is to praise a friend
- End, come to term with his grief
Song - Regular metric pattern set to music
- 12 syllables and slowly sung to the accompaniment
of a guitar or banduria
Sonnet Contains four iambic pentameter lines and a
complicated rhyme (4 stanzas 4 lines)
