WEEK 1 DATA AS DESIGN MATERIAL
This course is about DATA, specifically using data as design material. What does this mean? We will teach you a
basic understanding of what data is, the different types of data available, its qualities, ways of working with it,
and how you can use it in your design projects. Many products, systems, and services nowadays use and work
with data in their functioning. Think about digital services, smart devices within the Internet of things, and robots
that need data to function. Data is becoming increasingly important in business intelligence and in the
governance of cities. Therefore, it is not surprising that new design approaches that work with data emerge.
Examples are data enabled- or data-centric design. Thus, data is an invisible reality that affects us all and
requires design competence to work with effectively and responsibly.
WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT DATA?
- Data analysis → Data verzamelen voor onderzoek om met die data informatie te krijgen en problemen op te
lossen.
- De wereld wordt steeds digitaler
Data zijn ruwe, onverwerkte gegevens. Informatie is gestructureerde data in een nuttige context. Een tabel met
losse getallen is data. Een grafiek op basis van die tabel geeft ons informatie.
Tijdens een data analyse ga je gegevens die via een onderzoek zijn verzameld zorgvuldig bekijken en
interpreteren om daar vervolgens resultaten uit te halen. Die resultaten kun je vervolgens gebruiken om jouw
onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden. Voor het doen van een data analyse kun je verschillende methoden en
technieken gebruiken.

We verzamelen data hedendaags online en kunnen via digitale methoden de data omzetten tot informatie.
DIGITISATION
“Changing analogue information into digital form.”
Turning things into bits (e.g. photos, documents)
Fysieke informatie omzetten naar digitale informatie. Digitaal wil zeggen dat de informatie toegankelijk is voor
elektronische apparaten, zoals computer, smartphone of tablet.
DIGITILIZATION
“Restructuring processes and other domains of our lives around digital technologies and digitized information.”
E.g., changing how medical results are received by patients
• De fysiekheid aanpassen
• Transferring data becomes cheaper
• Everyone become to get a computer
• Digitalisering heeft alles in de wereld verandert, je gaat anders handelen en denken
,Verschil Digitisation en Digitilization is dat Digitisation het omzetten van fysieke data naar digitale data is en dat
Digitilization de verandering is hoe mensen de data toegediend krijgen. Zo werd dit vroeger alleen fysiek gedaan,
maar nu vooral digitaal. Digitisation is dus het omzetten en Digitlization de verandering.

Digitisation → Fysieke winkels met dvd’s omzetten tot Netflix waar je de films online vandaan kan halen
Digitalization → Films via digitaal platform kunnen kijken zonder naar zo’n winkel te moeten

A digital society is a society in which everything runs on digital technology. It is a society in which paperless and
electronic means are the norm. In a digital society, every aspect of our lives is profoundly being affected by the
digitalisation of data. This includes how we communicate and socialise, how we work, learn, stay healthy, and
participate in politics and the economy.

Je kan als je een onderzoek doet data verzamelen maar je creëert ook dagelijks data. Er zijn verschillende
activiteiten op een dag waarmee externe producten/bedrijven/etc. data verzamelen over jouw handelingen en
gedrag.
DATA
Refers to raw, unprocessed facts and figures without context. It is the foundation for all subsequent layers but
holds limited value in isolation.

Is organized, structured and contextualized data. Information is useful for answering basis questions like ‘who’,
‘what’, ‘where’ and ‘when’.

Is the result of analyzing and interpreting information to uncover patterns, trends, and relationships. It provides
on understanding of ‘how’ and ‘why’ certain phenomena occur.

WISDOM
Is the ability to make well-informed decisions and take effective action based on understanding of the underlying
knowledge.
