Upward Communication -The needs of the work unit are communicated from the staff nurse to the
nurse manager. The nurse manager then communicates to the nursing director whose authority is
needed to make decisions. Each person is one level up the organizational chart. Upward
communication provides leaders with the information needed to make decisions
DOWNWARD COMMUNCATION - The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), the highest level of
nursing leadership in an organization, directs communication to the nursing directors, who relay
information to the nurse manager. This is a traditional form of communication in organizations and
helps to coordinate activities at various levels of the hierarchy. Downward communication is also
used to deliver key information to all colleagues at the same time, often in writing (email or
document)
HORIZONTAL COMMUNCATION Nurse managers interact with other nurse managers on the
same level of the organizational chart.
DIAGONAL COMMUNCATION: Managers interact informally with other colleagues and
managers across the organization to achieve goals and establish standards that support the
organization’s operations
THE GRAPEVINE: Grapevine communication flows quickly and haphazardly among people at all
hierarchical levels and usually involves three or four people at a time. Senders have little
accountability for the message and often the message becomes distorted as it speeds along. Given
the frequency of grapevine communication in all organizations, all managers must attempt to better
understand how the grapevine works in their organization as well as who is contributing to it.
