P2: Explain how the key processes at check-in, through security and at the gate comply with legal
and regulatory requirements
I will discuss how security and check-in processes at London Heathrow Airport ensure the safety and
security of others by obeying legal and regulatory requirements.

Ensure that your baggage allowance meets the airlines regulations. This is because there is a certain
amount of luggage a passenger can carry for example EasyJet has a total hand baggage of 20kg per
person. However Ryanair allow you to have three bags that have a combined weight of 15kg.
Liquids, gels, creams and cosmetics should be in container that are below 100ml in a plastic bag
which is re-sealable and clear. This makes it easier for security to x-ray your items because they can
see what items are in your bag. They will also see the quantity of liquids because they need to know
you are not going to go over the limit.
Examples of liquids
E-cigarettes and cigarette lighters.
Toiletries such as toothpaste, sprays, perfumes, shaving foam, deodorant, hair and shower
gels, mascara, creams, and lotions like Vaseline and lipstick.
Liquids such as water, drinks, soups, and syrups.
Liquid-solid mixtures and items that have a similar consistency.
You are allowed to pack liquids in any baggage that you check in. Liquid restrictions apply to cabin
bags only. Security/customs will ask questions such as have you packed your own bag. Before you
are checked in you will be given a customs declaration form which will be about the items in your
bag. An example of a question would be are you bringing in fruits, vegetables, plants, or food? They
will also ask questions relating to who packed your luggage such as did you pack your luggage, are
these all your bags, are you carrying anything for someone?
Heathrow airport meets this legal regulatory requirement by ensuring that security/customs always
ask passengers if they have any items that they purchased from a duty free shop. It is important they
do this so they are able to ensure where passengers have got their items from. This ensures safety
because it means that security/customs will understand where they bought their items and how
much they have got. By understanding where they have got their goods from you will be able to
understand if a passenger is illegally transporting items or not.
You can buy drinks and perfumes in an EU airport/airlines after security have checked your luggage.
This is because they would be considered duty free allowance which means you buy goods and
transport them yourself. You must have evidence that it is yours by showing a receipt to security
staff. This means that you are not illegally importing goods because you have evidence that it is
yours.

something else and it will delay progress. They will check your hand luggage to see if it meets
guidelines.
Jackets and coats will need to be removed because they will need to be x-rayed separately. The x-
ray will not be able to scan with your jacket/coat on. This ensures that you don’t have any prohibited
items in your jacket/coat.
This meets legal and regulatory requirements because it ensures that nothing is hidden in electronic
devices. This is important that they do this because some passengers may hide forbidden items in
large electronic devices. This ensures safety because it ensures that if there is anything hidden in
electronic devices the x-ray or security officers will find it.
Large electronic devices such as laptop, iPads, Kindles and
tablets from your cabin baggage because they will need to be
x-rayed separately. This is because the x-ray can screen the
items easier by doing this. This ensures safety because
electronic devices may contain hidden explosives.

passenger may have concealed something such as drugs or hidden weapons. It is important that
they look remove their shoes or belts so security officers find any concealments and it makes it
easier for them to understand if a passengers is hiding something. For example they might ask a
passenger to take their shoes off but they may refuse causing suspicion. This ensures safety because
they will be able to fund any concealments by others.
You may be asked to remove your shoes or belt by security. This is because it will make it easier
while screening yourself. Shoes may be checked to see if there is any concealments. Your belt is
removed because it has metal this can activate the metal detectors. This ensures safety because it
ensures that there are no concealments and the screening process will be easier. This is done by
screening their items, checking their shoes and belts for concealments and understanding more
about the passenger by talking to them.
If you have a metal limb or implant you are advised to tell a security officer that is on-duty. Before
you travel your GP should give you a note which confirms this. This is because it can set off the metal
detectors so you should tell security.
