Introduction
The healthcare system would collapse without the contributions of Advanced Practice
Registered Nurses. APRNs rely heavily on the Consensus Model in their day-to-day work. The
Model provides governments with recommendations for adopting a standardized approach to
regulating the functions of APRNs. The goal is to facilitate APRNS' capacity to practice to the
full extent of their training and credentials.
Effect of Barriers to APRN
Health Care Cost
There have been positive and bad patient outcomes due to APRNs being restricted from
full practice. The drawbacks are much more prominent. Patients had more freedom of choice in
where they may go for medical care when APRN models were being put into operation
(Urbanowicz, 2019). Limiting APRNs' area of practice reduces the available market, which
drives up healthcare costs. In addition to driving up healthcare costs, restricting access to
APRNs' entire scope of practice might cause patients to spend more time in hospitals and
emergency rooms.
Access to Care
The state regulatory agencies that have erected barriers to the APRN profession also
significantly impact patients' ability to get the care they need. Reducing the number of APRNs
available in rural regions will harm the health of residents who desperately need access to basic
care. Because of the shortage of doctors, patients had to wait longer for appointments, inevitably
leading to worse health outcomes. Access to providers was higher for APRNs in states with full
practice than in places with restrictive restrictions (Kathy Burns & APRN-CNS, 2021).
