Key Points
The case study highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility for businesses
and their suppliers. The case centers on the treatment of workers at Apple suppliers Foxconn and
Pegatron. Multinational corporations' ethical responsibilities, public perception, and international
business practice are all highlighted by this case (Hao & Bu, 2022). Women's rights, excessive
hours, and environmental infractions were among the most serious allegations, surpassing those
against Foxconn (Hao & Bu, 2022). Apple was in the awful position of becoming the scapegoat
for all Chinese outsourcing by IT businesses.
Corporate Social Responsibility
The prosperity of a company depends on its commitment to social responsibility. CSR
perception is the foundation for consumer loyalty and spending. The public generally does not
back businesses with a poor reputation for ethics or lawbreaking. Tired production workers pose
a risk to themselves, their coworkers, and the company by creating a hostile environment and
inducing mental health crises like multiple suicides (Koberg & Longoni, 2019). The firm risks
losing customers and funding if these problems are ignored.
Public Opinion
The media's exposure to the infractions in China gained widespread attention worldwide
and earned Apple a bad reputation. Apple faced backlash from dissatisfied customers as news of
the supplier's abuse of its employees circulated. Since the more well-known a firm is, the more
the media focuses on Apple. When the public learned of the unethical treatment of workers, they
were outraged (LeBaron et al., 2022). It devastated Apple's brand image, and the company had to
take decisive measures to fix the problems.
