P1: Activity 2: Use appropriate language and active listening
ACTIVITY:
Please answer the following questions:
Q1. What should communication skills include?
Communication skills should include:
➢ The use of clear and straightforward language
➢ A message that is direct and concise
➢ An ability to attract and hold the attention of the audience.
Q2. How can you develop your language skills? Give two (2) examples.
You could develop your language skills by:
Reading business and trade journals, magazines and articles. This will improve your
knowledge of vocabulary and also of the current industry and business news (and
trends).
Using alternative words rather than repeating the same words over and over; these
can be researched easily via the internet or by using a thesaurus/dictionary that you
may already have in the workplace.
Q3. Briefly explain an instance where you have needed to change your use of language to
suit a specific audience.
In order to complete high school and get a diploma, I had to present a project I had worked for
over 4 months and give an oral presentation about it in front of a large audience. As the topic I
chose for this project was marketing, I changed my language and vocabulary of it in order to
suit the audience properly.
Q4. What is active listening? Explain in your own words (20-30 words).
Active listening is a technique used in professions such as training and conflict resolution. This
technique requires the listener to repeat back what they have heard from the speaker by re-
stating or paraphrasing this in their own words. This enables all parties to ensure the correct
understanding has been made.
Q5. Give a definition of “stakeholder” and give three examples.
Stakeholders are all the persons that are connected to and have a concern or interest within
the organisation. Three examples of stakeholders could be: customers and clients, employees
and CEO/senior management.
