P1: Activity 4: Use a variety of communication styles and negotiations techniques to reach
common ground
ACTIVITY:
Please answer the following questions:
Q1. What are the five (5) types of communication styles? List them and give their brief
explanation in your own words.
➢ Assertive. This style of communication is the most effective as it comes from a place of
confidence and a healthy self-esteem. This direct communication is focussed and enables you
to ask for what you want.
➢ Aggressive. This is all about achieving the goal – winning the point regardless of the other
party. It is not about mutual agreement, and the individual can become forceful and bullying in
their efforts to achieve their goal.
➢ Passive-aggressive. This can be more difficult to recognise, but essentially the individual will
appear passive and compliant on the surface while using a more aggressive stance when taking
actions.
➢ Submissive. This style is about pleasing others in order to avoid conflict. The individual will
disregard their own wants and needs and put those of the other person above their own.
➢ Manipulative. The characteristics of this style are more devious, such as scheming and
calculating to achieve the required goal. It may be difficult to know the individual’s true intent
as they will look to influence or control the outcome in subtle ways.
Q2. As mentioned in section 2.2 of this guide, negotiation skills need to be learnt so that you
can successfully work with others to find mutually acceptable outcomes within all business
operations. Please recap the elements necessary for effective negotiation.
The necessary elements for effective negotiation are:
➢ Know your objectives
➢ Understand the viewpoints of others
➢ Make your first proposal and set the tone of the negotiations
➢ Listen to other counter-proposals and make sure you thoroughly understand what is
being communicated
➢ Look to renegotiate on your proposal in response
➢ The above process may need to happen a few times until both/all parties reach
acceptable terms.
Q3. When seeking mutual beneficial solutions, you may apply different techniques. Please
explain the mediation skills and conflict resolution techniques in your own words (20-30
words each).
Mediation skills. This is where a neutral third party can help opposing parties to reach
an agreed solution within communications. The mediator can help both/all parties to
common ground
