Our consultation company Comm-Psych has been approached by the Department of Social Welfare. A
request has been made, to administer an assessment and to evaluate various staff, in order to appoint a
suitable candidate for a social worker post.
A group of interns will be sent in for an evaluation. We are required to administer an appropriate
questionnaire to ascertain that the values and mindset of the chosen candidate are deemed suitable.
Ideally, we seek a candidate that will regard their line of work important and will experience satisfaction
in it.
Being a social worker can be an arduous and rewarding profession. Over and above having the necessary
qualifications, the department seeks individuals that are passionate about helping their communities, they
remain calm and composed during difficult situations, they make the most of their circumstances and
value the people around them. Individuals that intend to contribute good.
The social worker will be part of a team, based at a welfare center in a rural area, where community
engagement and excellent communication skills are necessary.
We have decided to formulate a questionnaire based on two personality theories. The aim of which will
be to best identify well-suited personality traits and types for this role.
It is evident that we seek to identify an individual that believes strongly in nurturing community strength,
works towards the integration of various role-players in any situation, values the input, needs and
experience of others. We will evaluate the candidate’s capacity to function within a larger system.
The relevance of the Ecosystemic Approach
Social work involves work with interconnected transactional networks. The ecosystems perspective
provides a framework for thinking about and understanding networks in their complexity. The
Ecosystemic Approach emphasizes a particular manner of thinking, it seeks to describe human
functioning. It focuses on individuals functioning as a part of a larger system, and seeks to identify the
communication and relationship patterns within this system. In terms of this approach, an individual is
operating optimally if the relationship between them and the system within which they function are both
maximized, they do not pursue their needs and goals at the expense of the environment or of others, they
acknowledge that they have a responsibility towards others and the fulfilment of their needs. This state of
optimal functioning implies a healthy balance between change and consistency, a system open to new
experiences and transformation, yet willing to maintain a degree of stability. Accordingly, under this
approach, the questions will incorporate the general systems theory, cybernetics and constructivism. The
general systems theory reiterates that one system consists of smaller systems and is a part of a larger
system, and human functioning is examined through the interactional patterns within and between these
systems. Cybernetics looks at the patterns of communication and exchange of information between
elements, it highlights the perceptions we have of others and of ourselves through others, the way we
organize experiences, and the significance we associate to aspects in our lives. Constructivism, primarily
social constructivism examines the important role social and cultural contexts play in the way we perceive
our realities and the way we interpret the world or create meaning.
The relevance of the African Perspective
The context in which the social worker is required to work in is diverse and they cannot operate solely by
one worldview, it would be necessary to take the different, specifically the African cultural context into
