INVASIVE SPECIES:
Invasive species are the organisms introduced into the environment which is not it's
native causing harm to the native species .
MICE WITH PARACHUTES:
The most creative and interesting approach for eradicating the invasive species is of
'mice with parachutes' technique for eradicating the Brown tree snake, which
invaded the tiny island of Guam in 1940s, after stowing on a U.S. military plane
coming from another Pacific island. The snakes have eaten the birds enormously,
which in turn increased the population of spiders and seeds spreading also
decreased.
Air dropping dead mice filled with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol,
over the jungles of Guam was introduced. The mice come sailing down in little
parachutes. Then the parachutes get stuck in trees where snakes can find and eat
them. The acetaminophen ingested in snakes prevents it's blood cells from carrying
oxygen and causing snakes to go into coma and die within 60 hours. Dead mice, the
prey of snake, here works like a vessel for poison. It was pretty effective technique.
DOWNFALL OF USING "MICE WITH PARACHUTES" TECHNIQUE:
The potential downfalls of this approach that might not have been mentioned in the
video in my opinion are:
In this technique , in order to kill snakes we will be killing many mice.
Although it might be time consuming process and also expensive.
There are high chances of many other creatures getting entangled in the
parachutes.
