, Task 2:
Potential Risks to an Organisation Committing to an e-Commerce System
(P3) And how any Security issues in e-Commerce can be overcome: (M2)

There are many potential risks when committing to an e-commerce system. This is because there are
a lot of people on the internet who try to hack and scam people. If the site doesn’t have good
protection, then someone could gain access to the businesses database and get all of the customers’
information and personal data. Also if there isn’t good enough bandwidth and protection then
someone could take down the website by sending viruses or unwanted information to it. This could
potentially crash it. Because of this people then may not trust your site if it crashes and goes down.
This could lead to loss of customers which would impact the company negatively. To protect against
these threats and overcome this issue, a strong firewall is needed to close certain ports so that
unnecessary data can’t pass through. This means that only data that is needed is allowed to enter
the network and the rest is blocked. Also anti-virus software should be installed to identify and
remove any viruses that may get on the system. Viruses could damage the site and potentially take it
down or find out information. This is why anti-virus software is important.

Another risk is identity theft. If a hacker gains access to the database and steals some information on
a customer, then that is identity theft. They could then buy items using that customers’ details or
use their information in other negative ways. This would greatly impact the reputation of the
business and they probably be fined or shut down if they can’t fix the problem. To prevent identity
theft, SSL (Secure Socket Layers) would protect any entered data from unwanted hackers. SSL can
easily be identified if the URL has HTTPS at the beginning of it. People will know that the site can be
trusted there is secure socket layers because they know their information is secure. SSL should
always be present when a customer is buying a product and they are entering any personal
information.

The site should also have something to make the user prove they aren’t a robot. Usually this is re
typing blurry words or choosing certain pictures. An e-commerce site should also force users to use a
strong password to prevent anyone signing in on other customer accounts. This makes sure that if
someone loses their account because someone found out their password by guessing then it isn’t
the businesses fault. It could be the businesses fault if they allowed for a simple password like
“password” or “12345” for example.

One last risk is that if a customer doesn’t like the item they have bought, then they should be able to
return it. If a customer isn’t able to return unwanted items because they aren’t what they thought or
because they don’t like them, then they will probably stop shopping at that store. To overcome this
issue, a returns policy needs to be in place and easily accessible by customers when they are buying
items. This means that the customers know how long they have to return any items if any problems
have occurred. For example, if a problem in the delivery occurred and the item got damaged, then
the customer could return and no further problems would be a result of that.
