1.Microform document system
Microforms have long been in use in libraries as an inexpensive means of preserving
and disseminating rare as well as deteriorating documents. The principal kinds of micro forms
used for document systems are Roll microfilm, Microfiche, Microfilm jacket, Aperture cards, Ultra
fitche, Film chips and scroll.
Roll microfilm system
This is the principal medium used in business applications of automated microform
retrieval systems. A roll microfilm can hold 2000 or more images.
Microfiche systems
Most computer output microform is on microfiche, a small rectangular film. Its area of
applications included airline, fire service, police forces and telephone directory assistance
operations.
Ultra fiche systems
It is claimed that its compactness permits the use of a small low inertia mechanism for
retrieval of images.
Scroll systems
The microfiche"scrolls" through with the "cut marks"on the film helping to locate the required
fiche and the individual frame is located on the basis of its 2-dimensional coordinates.
2.Optical storage systems
The optical disk is a plastic disk coated with a thin photosensitive metallic layer the information
is recorded on to it by means of a laser beam of fluctuating intensity which melts pits into the
film layer of the recording surface. The presence of absence of a pit on the recorded surface
corresponds to the bit stream information pattern. There are primarly two kinds of optical
storage devices
1. CD ROM(Compact Disk Read Only Memory)
2. WORM(Write Once Read Many Times)
3.Multimedia Document storage systems
In multimedia systems the real world objects itself can be stored in the system. Multimedia
database management system is the key to multimedia storage systems. Such systems
represent integration and management of different data stored in various media namely
alphanumeric text, figures, images and sound.
