Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted

-Some bible scholars say:
-that this is the compendium (summary) of all of Christ’s teachings
-T hat this is the MAGNA CARTA (T he fundamental law of Christ’s teachings).
As such, it is considered to be one of the important speeches of the Lord.
Gospel of Matthew
-is known as the first gospel (this does not mean that it was the first gospel that
was written- the first gospel that was written was the gospel of Mark).
If the gospel of mark emphasizes the actions and deeds of Jesus, the gospel of
Matthew emphasizes the teachings of Jesus- which is why it is also called the
teaching gospel.
T hus, the reason why it is called the first gospel is because during the first century
of Christianity, the gospel that was widely used by early christians because of its
emphasis on the teachings of the Lord was the gospel of Matthew.
Compared to synoptic writers, Matthew had a certain characteristic that
differentiated him from them.
He wrote in a systematic way- He grouped Jesus’ similar teachings under one
grouping. T he teachings of Jesus on similar subjects were grouped in one group.
T his resulted in 5 speeches in the gospel of Matthew- T hese 5 speeches were the
five groupings Matthew did of Jesus’ teachings. One of these speeches were the
beatitudes. If you compare his gospel to others, you’ll notice that Jesus’ teachings are
scattered all throughout the bible.
