Banning motorcycles has been a controversial problem for many years. In
modern life, motorcycles play an important role in daily activities. It's one of the
inventions that make human life much easier, meanwhile, it has its own drawbacks
as well such as pollution, traffic, and noise. Some people believe that although
motorcycles are useful, they should be not allowed to be used in the city center.
Other individuals are totally against it. For me, I strongly believe that motorcycles
should not be banned in HCM city.
I suppose that motorcycles are the most convenient and economical means
of transportation in Vietnam. It is obvious that motorcycles play an important role
in Vietnamese city-dwellers daily commute, and they have become the most
convenient in traffic. Especially in big cities like Hanoi or HCM city, which have a
complex network of small roads and tiny alleys that are accessible only by
motorbikes. We can go wherever and whenever we like. We can enjoy beautiful
sights around when riding. It's easy to ride and find a place to park. Motorbikes are
an efficient means of transportation because they take up less space on the road
while four-wheel-drives take up space even though often contain just one person.
In addition, it isn't too expensive for us to buy a motorbike. Not all of the people in
the developing countries can buy a car. They also use less fuel than cars and buses.
Banning motorbikes in HCM city will affect most citizens's lives in
Vietnam. Motorbikes are the main means of transport for my family, as well as
most families in the country. According to a newspaper, there are 910 motorbikes
per 1,000 residents in Saigon. Therefore, banning motorbikes might affect daily
Saigon life if other alternatives are not installed in time. Also, a total downtown
ban on vehicles would require a huge lifestyle shift for most residents because
people are used to driving a motorbike to to go work or school. Motorcycles are
also a valuable asset for some families, and the livelihoods of millions of people
are tied to motorcycles. If the motorcycle is forbidden, it will rob the source of
income of most families. For instance, a motorcycle has become a large source of
income for Grab drivers who are often college students working to keep the wolf
from the door; if banning motorcycle are applied, they will face financial
problems. It's impossible to force people to stop using motorcycles while they don't
have any better choices.
