Components of a Window
The top most portion of any window in Window inWindows XP is called the Title
bar. This bar displays the name of the window on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, the
Title bar displays three buttons namely the minimize, maximize and close buttons. The minimize
button is used to reduce a window into a button on the taskbar. The maximize button is used to
enlarge a window to cover the entire screen. The close button is used to close a window.
Every window displays the Menu bar just below the Title bar. The menu bar
contains certain options such as File, Edit, View and help. These options are used to perform
specific operations. For example, the file option is used for carrying out file-related operations.
The Status bar of any window in windows XP displays information such as the
total number of items present inside the window, the total memory space occupied by the items
and the name of window and similar status information.
Quitting Windows XP
Click on the Start button of the Taskbar. Then click Turn off Computer option.
Immediately, a Turn off Computer box gets displayed. Inside the Turn off Computer box, click on
the Turn Off option. After afew seconds, a screen displaying the message, It is now safe turn
off your computer appears. You can now switch off your computer
Icons on the Desktop
My Computer
The My Computer icon lets you view the files, folders, and drives in your system.
Recycle Bin
This icon lets you store deleted files and recover them later, if required.
My Documents
Recently edited files and documents are displayed in this folder.
Windows Accessories
Windows Accessories is a program group in the start menu which consists of some very
handy tools such as WorldPad, Notepad, paintbrush and Calculator.
All the Windows accessories can be accessed from the Accessories group. Click the
Start button, point to programs and then point to Accessories.
1. Word Pad
Word Pad is a simple word processor program used to create documents such as letters
and memos. It offers basic feaures for formatting the documents such as boldfacing, italicizing
and underlining the text. Further, it offers the opportunity to add new text. It also enables the
users to move lines of text from one location to another inside the document.
To open WordPad select Start->Programs->Accessories->WordPad
2. Notepad
Notepad is a text editor program which is used for wri5ing short letters, memos and
create text files. However, while working in Notepad, formatting is difficult as it is a simple
program for entering text.
3. Calculator
The Calculator programs mathematical calculations easily. There are two types of
calculators built into this program a Standard Calculator and Scientific Calculator.
