• These are devices that are used to maintain the patency of
patients air passage
• The aim of airway is to prevent the toungue fall
• There are 2 types of airways oropharyngeal and
nasopharyngeal

• These are designed in shape that fits well in the contour of mouth and
pharynx
• Introducing this airway will keep the tongue away from posterior pharyngeal
wall
• The tip is inserted between tongue and posterior pharyngeal wall prevents
tongue falling back on posterior pharyngeal wall and thus maintaining the
patency

• Choosing the size: the correct size airway is chosen by measuring the device
on the patient . It must extend from the lip to the angle of mandible
