• The chemical reaction, in the
presence of moisture, between
the active mineral constituents
and the alkali hydroxides
present in concrete.
• Formation of alkali-silica gel of
unlimited swelling type –
formation of cracks.
• Initial cracks give access to more
moisture resulting in more
expansion, which in turn results
in more cracks.
